Rhapidophyllum hystrix seems to be completely hardy in Budapest, Hungary. Plants ordered from Woodlanders, Florida, were planted out in 1993. I leave some leaves below the bush but did not cover it at all. (While Trachycarpus is covered to protect the leaves) at this palm I did not observe any frost damage so far. Saw huge specimens in N. Florida (panhandle) and the trunk was 2m high and 1m wide. The nicest specimen in the in its norther range of cultivation I saw in the National Arboretum Washington DC., where the bushes were already large and with their sprouts and spreading leaves, covered a considerable area already in 1983 - and they were very attractive. It took however a few more years until I found the resources of young plants. The Creative Native, Inc. in Florida in Perry sold it in larger quantity. In the early 1990th a 36" plant was USD12.50 with a minimum order from USD 250 (UPS),to USD 500 (pick up) and USD 1000 in case of delivery.
